Hello Spartan Community,
After two excruciating weeks filled with multiple midterms, the much deserved Spring break is finally upon us. Perfect time to get those sleep hours back and rejuvenate ourselves for the last few months of this school year.
It also happens to be a perfect time to get caught up on items that unfortunately had to be neglected for the sake of maintaining grades (i.e. these reports). And so without further ado, attached for your personal viewing is my March 22 Board Report.
Some quick updates…
- On March 22, Board of Directors who were present went through a first reading of the 2017-2018 budget. Each department unfortunately took a share of cuts to accommodate for rising costs. A final reading and vote on this budget is most likely set for our next Board Meeting on April 12, from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. in Room 1A of the Diaz Compean Student Union.
- On the very same day, the CSU Board of Trustees voted 11-8 via hand vote — not by roll call — to approve a 5% tuition increase across the board for all 23 CSU campuses. Speaking for myself, I am very disappointed in the final vote. As a society, we have an obligation to provide our fellow man with equal access and opportunity. With the cost of a college education already expensive as is, this decision will only make it tougher on the thousands of CSU students struggling to make ends meet. Overall, it was a weak move by the Board of Trustees. They were brave enough to raise the payment for an education, but not brave enough to put their name behind it.
- Campaigning season to elect the 2017-2018 A.S. Board of Directors is finally underway. To start things off, Associated Students and the Students’ Election Commission held a kickoff event on March 21 as a way of introducing candidates to the student community. The next event will be a Candidate Mixer scheduled for April 6, from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the Campus Village Building Quad.
